Jaws, E.T. and… MLK?

May 22, 2009 Front Page 2 Comments

This just in on the movie front: one of history’s perennial civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King, is going to get the star treatment.

Steven Spielberg has just signed on to make a biopic about Martin Luther King. No details are finalized yet and very little is known currently about the project, but the prospect tends to make one more than a little nervous.

In response to news reports about the film, Dreamworks, the studio who is going to be releasing the film said the following: “The purpose of making a movie about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is to tell a great story which could bridge distances and bring people together. We remain committed to pursuing a film chronicling Martin Luther King’s life provided that there is unity in the family so we can make a film about unity in our nation. We believe this is what Dr. King would have wanted.”

For so many, Dr. King is much more than an icon. His vision and passion provide an unending source of inspiration for so many in our movement. So the question remains: Can it be possible to make a 2 hour movie that really details the vast societal waves that Dr. King had a hand in? Or will it be just storytelling? What do you think?
