How Does That Butt Taste?

June 25, 2009 Front Page 2 Comments

Are you smoking a cigarette while reading this? You’d better not be. That’s the message President Obama wanted to convey on Monday when he signed into effect a new law on smoking.

The law, the toughest ever, bans advertising or luring youth through flavored cigarettes and cigars. It also forbids advertising at sporting events, free samples, and the use of “mild” or “light” in describing cigarettes. Finally, tobacco companies will have to fully disclose all ingredients used in cigarettes, as well as use graphic images on their packs to illustrate the effects of smoking on the body.

Gotta say, Obama’s got a point. Smoking is basically like a socially acceptable form of prolonged suicide. It is by far one of the worst things you could ever do to your body. In the time you took to read this paragraph so far, someone, somewhere in the world has died of cigarettes. It happens every 8 seconds. Yet in the last minute, 10 million cigarettes were purchased around the world. Some of them will have been purchased by the 3000 American youth that tried smoking for the first time ever today. And of them, half of the ones who become long-term smokers will die in the future from a tobacco-related illness.

So you’ve heard the same message from your health teacher or parents before. You’re sick of hearing the same old thing. It still doesn’t change the fact that what they say is true. Is this stressful to hear? Are you thinking of going out for a smoke because of it?

Just know that if you do, you’ll shorten your life by 11 minutes, every time you light up.

The problem I have with Obama smoking is that he is practically a walking advertisement to youth. Many teens look up to him, therefore, he has a greater responsibility to quit. In the conference he claimed to be 95% healed. http://www.newsy.com/videos/the_800_lb_cigarette_in_the_room However, that’s not enough when your actions are copied by the Nation’s young.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Endorses Female Genital Mutilation?!

May 7, 2010

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a policy statement that basically endorses female genital mutilation;  suggesting the law should “enable pediatricians to reach out to families by offering a ritual nick” such as “pricking or incising the clitoral skin to satisfy cultural requirements.”
I could rant about this, but I think my friend Rebecca’s photographic [...]

St. Vincent’s hospital in Greenwich Village was one of the few hospitals in NYC that was willing to support midwives who do home births. But now it’s closing, and that means about half of the midwives in New York will either have to stop practicing, or practice illegally.
This is happening because of a [...]

Happy 420! A Call For a Change in Drug Education

April 20, 2010

All the talk about 420 today has me thinking about the “education” I had about drug use as a child. I’m sure we all went through DARE or something similar; in my opinion, those programs do way more damage than good, and sometimes even inspire dangerous drug use in kids.
Here’s how. My DARE program told [...]

I stopped buying Boca Burgers awhile ago because I realized they were owned by Philip Morris, and I didn’t want to send my money to a big evil cigarette company. Turns out that was a good decision, as most Boca Burgers might also be about the health equivalent of gnawing on a pack of cigarettes [...]

Check out this interesting documentary from Frontline about the Obama administration’s effort to win health care. It’s a lil sappy, but it’s really eye opening.
