Chicago Youth Stay Home From School to Stay Safe

October 27, 2009 Front Page No Comments

picture-848Yesterday, in an act of protest, students living in Chicago‘s Gardens neighborhood who attend Fenger High (the high school that slain teenager Darrion Alberts atteneded) stayed home from school.   With the support of their parents, the teenagers are protesting conditions by staying home and boycotting the violence they have to face to get an education. More after the jump.

Since Albert’s death there have been several additional major fights at the school as well as in the adjacent neighborhood.  Of course, in the Windy City youth violence isn’t isolated in one school or neighborhood.  Yesterday, not so far away in another neighborhood on the South Side another teenager was murdered. The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was shot multiple times. The victim was a student at Dyett High School. He is the second Dyett student to be shot this school year.

Can’t we all agree that all children deserve, at the very least, an education!? To whom may they look for protection? BLACK BOYS SHOULD NEVER BE IN THE BUSINESS OF BOYCOTTING SCHOOL. THE VERY PREMISE IS SO ANTITHETICAL TO OUR HISTORY!! WE HAVE FAILED OUR CHILDREN and now THE KETTLE IS BOILING.
