If you recall during the 2008 Presidential Campaign, while Democrats were chanting “Yes We Can,” Republicans were chanting “Drill Baby Drill.” On June 20th, 2008 this initially prompted Candidate Obama to give a speech in Jacksonville, FL proclaiming “When I am President, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts.” A short time later when the Energy Reform Act came before Congress for debate, Candidate Obama changed his position to say that he was open to offshore drilling, in an effort to compromise and reach an agreement with Republicans. Fast forward two years later; on March 31st of this year, President Obama announced that his administration was expanding oil and natural gas drilling off Florida’s and other coastlines. Now, less than a month later we have complete devastation off US boarders in the Gulf of Mexico. A BP Oil Rig exploded, resulting in human fatality and one of the largest oil spills off US coastlines in our nation’s history. Mr. President you said that with new technology our coasts would be safe in terms of offshore drilling. It’s reported that this was one of BP’s newest rigs. I’m a fan of your policies Mr. President, but next time maybe you should think twice before compromising your position to try to please others.
Some people have a problem with living and then there’s those who have a problem with dying. This actually reminds me of the Ricky Smiley “Drive-Thru Funeral Home” joke. Imagine seeing someone you knew that died and was presented at the funeral in their element. For example, if this about was me, I’d be standing in front of the crying thousands with headphones attached to my face and both hands pasted on the vinyl that lay atop of two technic 1200′s…or maybe some pioneer 1000′s since we’re going digital these days.
But this isn’t about me. This is about David Morales Colón, a puerto rican citizen that was fatally shot recently and was put to rest yesterday. Instead of a casket, his embalmed remains were mounted on a Honda CBR600 F4 and displayed in front of his family and friends.
“According to Puerto Rico’s Primera Hora newspaper, the motorcycle was given to the victim by his uncle, and upon Mr. Colón’s untimely demise, family members delivered the bike to the funeral home specifically for this unusual wake,” Autoblog.com reports.
Hopefully, the popularity of this story doesn’t overshadow the fact that a man did lose his life to gun violence, which is something that we all struggle and can relate with. Ride On Bro!!!
Proactivist/Artist, Luda-Christopher is back with another hit. But this time the importance of condom usage will be the hook since Trojan is sponsoring it. The 2010 Census Spokesman will act as a judge for Trojan’s new initiative to promote safe sex, something that I’ve actually been advocating for for about two years now. It makes a lot of sense since Luda’s last song was more of a bed banger than head banger<<<< I just wanted to say that!!!
$5,000, radio-play and an opportunity to open @ a Ludacris Show, is a good deal for an independent artist. The artists are being asked to visit the Magnum Live Large Project on the company's website, download a base track and record their own condom-related lyrics.
So I just spotted this article at TheGrio.com (via Paradise Gray’s Facebook page) claiming that African American Arizonans are on the fence about the recent changes in the state’s immigration policy. While the author, Todd Johnson, highlights that many leaders in the local civil rights community are supporting the pro-immigration movement, he argues that many black folks aren’t as excited about standing up for immigrants as you would think, especially given that the new law legalizes racial profiling.
To be honest, I always get a little freaked out when I read stories that boil down “the black opinion” to a couple of one liners from thought leaders in the African American community. But I have to be honest, I’ve personally heard many black people say things like “if the Mexicans get kicked out there will be more jobs for black people” etc. So I am willing to bet that Johnson isn’t too far off with his assessment.
But I would encourage black “fencers” to think more critically about this racist effort by Arizona. This law creates the slipperiest of slopes and could potentially threaten all of our freedom. Come on, do you really think they are only going to stop Latino looking people when there are illegal immigrants of every shade and background in this country? If you think “Driving While Black” is bad now, wait a couple of months when this thing really kicks in.
And I don’t even have enough time to discuss the whole “states’ right” argument that has slipped back in to the discourse lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start hearing extremist talking about secession.
