I stopped buying Boca Burgers awhile ago because I realized they were owned by Philip Morris, and I didn’t want to send my money to a big evil cigarette company. Turns out that was a good decision, as most Boca Burgers might also be about the health equivalent of gnawing on a pack of cigarettes with ketchup.
A recent study has come out reporting that most major brands of veggie burger are made with the chemical hexane, a neurotoxin and air pollutant. Check out the Mother Jones article for a list of which veggie burgers are delicious barbecue entrees. . .and which will probably kill you slowly.
As much as I love the taste of fake meat as a vegetarian, this doesn’t come totally unexpected for me. New rule of thumb, which I feel applies far outside the realm of food: If it appears to be a chicken but definitely isn’t, you might not want to trust it.
