MILWAUKEE: 1st of the Month Comes Early, Flood Victims Line Up For Assistance
This morning, I took the scenic route on the way to drop my mother off at work. While on Green Bay Rd, I drove past a lot of homes that displayed destroyed remains of what used to be a basement on the front curb. It looks as if the city of Milwaukee has been evicted. A feeling of appreciation came over me but as I thought of those that were overwhelmed by Thursdays storm or the victims of Katrina, I begin to question why I was so blessed to have dodged another natural occurrence.
Much further up the road, I drive pass the “welfare building” on 12th & Vliet and instantly began utilizing the camcorder on my EVO. I have no intentions of exploiting the hundreds of people that benefit from the Welfare initiative here in Milwaukee, but to broadcast how many people are dependent upon these services. It was only 7:30 a.m., the line was wrapped around four corners with Police & Sheriff Deputies monitoring the scene, but today isn’t the 1st? Confused about the large amount of people getting the 26th and the 1st mixed up, I tweeted about it and got a response from my home girl Nikki. Apparently, the state is giving out checks for the month of July to those beneficiaries of the welfare program that lost their power in the flood. Depending on how much you usually get determines how much they will replace.
I’m thinking they’re going to need someone to calm down the line of frustrated recipients if people start to get turned away after waiting so long. There are a lot of disadvantage families before and after the flood but as far as resources, I don’t know what Milwaukee got in it’s pocket….
