Milwaukee Aldermen Don’t Like Hip-Hop At All!!!!

July 24, 2010 Front Page No Comments

The picture on the left might as well say ‘No BLACK Music and here’s why! Last night, before djing in a Milwaukee Club on Water & Wisconsin, the owner comes up to me and says he’s cutting my set short because the Alderman threatened to shut him down. Apparently, they’re not too fond of the urban crowd that have been assembling inside and outside the establishment in the last couple of weeks. Now mind you, I had a long day so I really wasn’t even trying to have this conversation with him. I was kind of relieved that my set was shortened so I could gain extra sleep time in my vehicle. So, I can’t remember everything he was saying. But what did stick out in my mind is that the owner emphasized that the Alderman of the 4th District, Robert Bauman, wants it to be “Ghost White” down there. WTF does that mean and should I be offended? Should the owner feel that comfortable telling me this since he resembles the guy that made the comment?

It’s no secret that Alderman Bauman doesn’t like hip-hop/rap or its origins because only the establishments that play strictly hip-hop/rap struggle to stay open in his district, but how long will it be tolerated, blatant racism. Just last week, Alderman Donovan publicly criticized Milwaukee’s only curriculum based Hip-Hop School for practicing grafitti at its annual outdoor celebration. C’mon Milwaukee, what’s up with these guys?

It’s interesting though. I still ended up playing the music I planned on playing when I got there. The club was suffering like hell and after 20 minutes of another genre of music being played, the club security was politely knocking on my car door insisting that I DJ or they’ll lose their crowd and money. I think they didn’t want that crowd of black people that rented the club that night for their birthday party to live out the stereotype.
