Another Congressman Resigns After Sex Scandal

July 27, 2011 Front Page, Politics, Power 3 Comments

Rep. David Wu (D-OR) resigned from Congress yesterday after accusations arose that Wu had an unwanted sexual encounter with the 18-year-old daughter of a childhood friend and campaign donor. Wu said in a statement that he would leave office once Congress resolves  the debt ceiling crisis.

“With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues,” Wu stated.

Wu becomes the the fourth member of Congress to resign from a sex scandal this year, joining Republicans Chris Lee and John Ensign and fellow Democrat Anthony Weiner.  Wu didn’t deny that he had an encounter with the woman but also said he did “nothing illegal,” just exercised poor judgment.

Congressman Wu also made headlines in February when his staff reported that they had asked that the congressman seek psychiatric treatment prior to the 2010 elections. They were reportedly concerned about his erratic behavior, when, among other things, Wu e-mailed a photo of himself wearing a tiger costume to his staff. Congressman Wu later apologized for his behavior and said he was on medication and getting treatment for mental health issues. (Full USA Today story)
