Don’t Back Down, Keep Up the Fight! Attorney General Eric Holder Visits Texas Today

December 13, 2011 Front Page No Comments

This year has been a very emotional year for young people, people of color and the poor in Texas. Even though I was not alive during the era of Jim Crow laws that sought to segregate and suppress the electoral impact of African Americans, somehow I feel like I am in the midst of a Jim Crow fight today. The 82nd Session of the Texas Legislature proved brutal to the confidence that many voting rights groups and advocates have in our state lawmakers. During that session, state house and senate representatives voted to approve a Voter ID bill that offered so many restrictions that one might assume Mr. Jimmy Crow wrote it himself.

This photo ID law was deemed “emergency” legislation by Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Someone please call 911 because that emergency  Voter ID bill could flip the script on Texas voters by no longer allowing voters to use a voter registration card to cast a ballot – leaving more than a half million registered voters shot and voiceless.

According to the bill (SB-14), voters would need a valid photo identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. That identification cannot have been expired more than 60 days – yes, even if the picture is the same and you are the exact same person. In addition to a valid unexpired photo ID, Texans can show a military ID, VISA or passport. Oh yeah, or concealed handgun license. Not for those that may have a concealed handgun but those with “papers” for their concealed handguns.

My Right to Vote is Not a Game so Don’t Play!

September 21, 2011 Front Page, Politics No Comments

Anyone else confused about how the basic right, that we as Americans value and cherish is being disrespected and disregarded by thug groups with power? Since when did 2011 mark the point for which we allow our hard work and determination as a nation to create a more fair and balanced election process for all our citizens become the moment to put our country in reverse?

In 32 states we have Voter ID laws which would call for everyone to have a government-issued ID or driver’s license to prove their identity when they go to the polls and vote. Here’s the thing, I agree! Or, at least I am not opposed to the idea of individuals having to have some form of government-issued ID to vote. Not opposed to that at all.

However, I am opposed to laws such as the Voter ID law from Texas that limit the acceptable forms of identification to a Texas driver’s license or ID that has not been expired for over 60 days, a military ID, a U.S. passport or visa or a concealed handgun license. NO student IDs and no IDs issued by other states (geez, whatever happened to full faith and credit?). Shame. Whoever voted for this bill should be fire – or voted out!

Creative young brothers in Newark, New Jersey have created a pant and underwear line that is sure to make high school principals cringe. Irese Davenport, Mark Davenport and Dwayne Hoard are using their understanding of urban culture and experience in the entertainment industry to create Sagz Jeans. They are the first pants of their kind and are “high quality jeans that sag naturally.”

This patented design allows customers to select from various types of briefs that can be adjusted to desired sagging length while staying in place even without use of a belt. Talk about progressive.

King and Drama Queen on the Throne

August 1, 2011 Front Page, Music No Comments

Forget being “on one” the Super Dee Duper stars Jay –Z and Kanye West are on two. The New York Post is reporting that the BFF’s that share “The Throne” are in a money spat. Reportedly, Jay-Z and Kayne are “barely speaking” because West wants a competitive (and pricey) show while Jay wants a somewhat lower profile to keep the cost down.

The Post reported that, Jay-Z  is being “meticulous about the cost” because he is trying to pay back the advance money they have from Live Nation and the more than $400,000 per show would delay their ability to pay that debt.
