On Saturday, April 7, the Atlanta LYVEF partnered with the brothers of King of Tyre lodge #331 at Shoal Creek Park in Decatur, GA for our 1st annual Easter Egg Hunt Voter Registration/Voter Education celebration.
It’s always an amazing experience when you can build with the community, play with the kids and educate everyone on the importance of civic engagement!

In our community, we have had the debate over whether or not to use the word “nigga.” The rapper V Nasty was crucified when she said the term and the black community bashed her for using the word. The argument is that blacks use it as a term of endearment (nigga) and Whites have used it historically as a term of disrespect (nigger).
“We can do it, but they can’t” is the black communities argument – which leads me to my main topic of discussion.
In Florida, everyone has gathered (and righteously so) for Trayvon to bring about justice and ensure that an arrest is made after he was allegedly killed by George Zimmerman. But this past weekend in Chicago, 41 people were shot! A 6-year-old, a 1-year-old and the child’s mother were among those that were injured from gunfire and seven people were tragically killed.
Where is the national attention to the senseless gun violence that happens in our cities everyday? Where is the President’s condolences to our babies dying?
I guess it’s like the use of the word “nigga;” we can kill our own, but you can’t!
To quote the hip hop legend Rakim, “I GOT A QUESTION AS SERIOUS AS CANCER”
What is a black life worth in America? Is it worth nothing?
Is it worth a bag of Skittles and an iced tea? Is it worth a wink and a smile (Emmitt Till)? Almost every day my son and his friends walk outside to go play basketball or run to the store for snacks. So today when he asked me, I felt something different.
Fresh off watching Jasiri X video “Trayvon,” I gave Jasiri a call. His powerful song and visual images touched everyone’s spirit.
All day long, the blog world was in an uproar as everyone listened to the 911 call of Zimmerman taking the life of an angel and here my 15-year-old boy was asking me if he could to go the store. So today when he asked me of course I felt something different.
Anybody watch President Obama’s speech on education and No Child Left Behind?
In a nutshell, President Obama said that since Congress couldn’t make moves, he had to. The president turned some (but not all) of the power to reform education back to the states by inviting them to create their own accountability and advancement systems.
Ten years ago, a bipartisan rewrite of No Child Left Behind was signed by President George W. Bush. The 2002 law required all schools to administer reading and math standardized tests each year, and to increase the proportion of students passing them until reaching 100 percent in 2014.
