Crack is Wack! But at least now a crack sentence will almost match a cocaine sentence

July 28, 2010 Front Page No Comments

So you know how in the 80s everybody was like all into crack (but really it was seen as a black problem so they began throwing blacks in jail with super harsh jail sentences while cocaine lovers frolicked and flourished?) Well if you’ve been missing out on crack because of the astronomic sentence (crack:cocaine=100:1). Good news! Crack sentences just go a whole lot lighter. … Continue Reading

So it appears the white house is so anxious to disprove “reverse racism” charges that they are firing anyone who is accused of anything racial-prematurely. Never mind the fact that reverse racism is not even a legitimate term. Spotted via Gawker:

Maine LYVEF collects 5,110 signatures. Hey AZ! Legal citizen rights are nothing to balk at!

Have you heard about our crazy talented super hardworking Maine League of Young Voter Education Fund (LYVEF) affiliate? They have been carving a serious name for themselves since 2004.

Maine LYVEF is one of the most creative civic organizations in the state. While they may be best known for passing the Opportunity Maine initiative in 2007, a state program that provides student debt reduction for young people that live and work in the state after graduating from college, their most recent achievement involves work trying to give Portland’s immigrant community a voice in the city. This work is groundbreaking and poignant.  At a time when Arizona and other states are pursuing racial profiling and other ways to punish immigrants, the Maine LYVEF is fighting to give legal immigrants the opportunity to vote in city elections. Check out this smart video that shows how far we’ve come since the Bechdel Test was created in 1985 (I was around two year old then btw).

“The Bechdel Test is a simple way to gauge the active presence of female characters in Hollywood films and just how well rounded and complete those roles are. It was created by Allison Bechdel in her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For in 1985. It is astonishing the number of popular movies that can’t pass this simple test. It demonstrates how little women’s complex and interesting lives are underrepresented or non existent in the film industry. We have jobs, creative projects, friendships and struggles among many other things that are actually interesting in our lives… so Hollywood, start writing about it.”

Can the Tea Party Hold a Candle to the Youth Vote?

There’s been a whole lot of hype surrounding the new hot beverage parties such as the tea party. But as Bakari Kitwana recently pointed out, these parties haven’t actually produced any results. So why isn’t anyone talking about the youth-factor this midterm? The youth has already proven to bring it. In 08′ , “Two-thirds of the 23 million voters 18-29 who voted for president in 2008, voted for Barack Obama.”
