“Three Little Girls”

In time for Women’s History Month comes this new song from Jasiri X, telling the tales of senseless violence and its effect on our society and the lives of our women. From Jasiri himself:

“For Women’s History Month we wanted to shed light on how violent this society is especially towards woman and girls. “Three Little Girls” tells the stories of the senseless murders of Christina Taylor Green who was killed during the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Brisenia Flores who was gunned down by anti-immigrant militia intent on starting a race war, and Aiyana Jones who shot to death while asleep in her home, by the Detroit Police Department, while they were filming a reality TV show.”

“I realize these are sad stories, but how can we not be moved to action by the cold-blooded killings of innocent little girls? We have to begin to take an unflinching look at a culture that continues to glorify guns, bombs, and war and sees violence and aggression as the only solutions to its problems.”

Shout out to Paradise Gray for his work in the director’s chair on this one.

Odd Future’s Odd Future.

Last night, the LA crew that’s been buzzing for months now made their TV debut on Jimmy Fallon with an assist from The Roots. Keep an eye out for Mos Def at the end.

Is it just me or are these guys totally insane? And yet endlessly watchable.

Who’s heard of this dude Shad???

I heard this track today and then BOOM, the video is even hotter! Apparently, he’s Canadian, so maybe not as well known here. I hope that changes real quick. Check youtube for even more cool videos, but this one is tricky as hell and works like magic.

I Know You Got Soul.

I don’t know about the rest of you out there, but I’m heading toward what you might call a soul obsessive. Among my painfully large vinyl collection, among the most prized are my Otis Redding records. I’ve been digging in crates for years, looking for soul gems and paying far too much of my monthly budget to bring them home with me. But it’s always worth it. A good soul record is a thing of unparalleled beauty. And, some would argue, a type of music that’s gotten away from us these past few decades.

Sure, we’ve had neo-soul artists like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu cranking out some amazing work for years, John Legend and Alicia Keys putting out a steady stream of hits, making chart topping look easy. To me though, there was something about those Otis records, the Barbara Lynn sound, that was different. I couldn’t put my finer on it, but it’s as if they were dipped in some sort of ageless bronze, a sound that couldn’t be replicated or brought into the modern age.

Prince Snoop.

December 1, 2010 Front Page 1 Comment

We are sitting in the office on this rainy, windy, gross day, raising our spirits by listening to the new Robyn record (how can it be this good?) and up pops Snoop on a track, killing it as usual.

Which then brings me to inform the office that he might be performing at Prince William’s bachelor party. Yeah, read that again.

Snoop is being courted by Prince Harry to play Prince William’s bachelor party.

Somehow, not everyone in the world knew this. I feel compelled to change that.

Also, to celebrate the courting, Snoop cut a new single for the occasion, dubbed “Wet“, which he calls a quasi sequel to his 2008 track “Sexual Eruption” (NreallySFW, find that one yourself). From the man himself, “‘Wet’ is the perfect anthem for Prince William or any playa to get the club smokin’.”

I’m not sure about you, but this news makes me really happy.
