Rick Santorum’s Big Night

February 8, 2012 Front Page, Politics No Comments

Tuesday night was a big night for former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum as he surprised many by sweeping three primary states. Santorum won Colorado and Minnesota’s caucuses and Missouri’s non-binding primary. This big night for Rick Santorum once again shows that not all Republicans nationwide are sold on Mitt Romney as their choice for the 2012 GOP nominee.

At this point, Santorum can be considered the number two guy in the race and the only one who looks like he can try to take the nomination away from Mitt Romney. Rick Santorum is also, by far, the most conservative candidate left in the field, so he also garners a lot of support amongst conservative Republicans.

[Globetrotting]: Tour of Bwaise, Uganda

By Sacha Howarth at Million Person Project

I woke up at 5 a.m., surrounded by mosquito netting. In the bunk below me, Heather shifted in her sleep and the netting pulled a bit where her feet pushed up against it. Outside, a rooster crowed, despite it still being pitch black outside, and I realized I was not going to be able to fall back asleep.

It was my first morning in Uganda, and as I lay there and contemplated surrendering to the jetlag by opening my book, I heard a strange sound coming from just outside my window: sshh sshh sshh. The window overlooked a modest courtyard between the main house and the guest house in the backThere was a small patio and a well kept loose gravel path leading between the houses, and where ordinarily there would have been grass, there was dirt, of the rich, red kind you find here in Uganda. I peeked through the window to spy a man – the night watchman –raking the dirt. Sshh sshh sshh sshh.

A 15-year-old Georgia Girl’s Nightmare

Lidiane Carmo woke up in a Florida hospital bed with IVs in her frail arm and did not remember how or why she got there. Shortly after, Carmo learned that she was the only survivor of a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of several other passengers, including both of her parents and only sister.  She was returning home from a three-day church-related conference in Florida when her vehicle (a church van) was impacted in a multiple-car collision that was caused by a thick fog of smoke.

The devastating news was accompanied with a surprising discovery: she is undocumented and therefore not a legal citizen of the United States. Earlier this week, it was reported by many news outlets that she was at risk of being deported back to Brazil after being released from the Florida hospital. Brazil is a place that Carmo has not been to for more than 12 years.

Mitt Romney Wins Florida Primary

January 31, 2012 Front Page, Politics 1 Comment

Mitt Romney has won the Florida Republican Presidential Primary, strengthening himself as the clear favorite to win the 2012 Republican nomination and face President Barack Obama in November. Florida is a winner-take-all state, so 50 delegates go to Mitt Romney, which is the most so far this primary season. Newt Gingrich finished in a distant second, losing all the momentum that his campaign has gained recently. Newt Gingrich has said that he plans to stay in the race until the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida in August. Rick Santorum finished third and Ron Paul finished fourth.
