2011: Year of the Activist

December 20, 2011 Front Page No Comments

In 2008, community activists struggled to be heard as the noise from the presidential race convinced voters that the fate of our nation lay in a battle between two juggernauts, and that non-partisan organizing, once the back-bone of our democracy, had become superfluous.

Fast forward four years, and everything has changed. Seeing our hijacked democracy hurtling towards a fiery crash, the American citizen wrestled itself into the driver’s seat, and is putting our country back on track. We see that our futures will be determined, not by blind hope that a politician will do right by us, but by our country’s most marginalized voices coming together to advocate, loudly and tirelessly, for each other.

[Top 10] I’m Thankful For…

November 24, 2011 Front Page, Solutions No Comments

Working in politics and as an editor for a site dedicated to discussing problems, it can be difficult to be optimistic about the future. However, it’s the progress of our generation that invigorates me day after day. In 2011, there were a lot of things to be grateful for. Here are my top 10:

1. Marriage Equality Passing in New York: I cannot emphasize this enough – the last place that government should be making any decisions is within the families and bedrooms of two consenting adults.

2. The failure of legislation that would have mandated a government-issued photo ID to vote in Ohio. This saved 900,000 Ohio voters from being disenfranchised.

3. Young activists worldwide that inspire me everyday to believe in the power of organizing. Whether I agree with them or not, it’s nice to know that our generation hasn’t grown cynical and apathetic.

4. Spotify: Once upon a time, it was insane that we could carry our whole music collection on a tiny MP3 player. Apparently, even iPods must have become too burdensome, so it’s a good thing we can access our music whenever, wherever.

5. The fact that anyone can start a movement with a phone and an internet connection.

6. The failure of Amendment 26 in Mississippi. As long as we live in a society that preaches abstinence-only education and allows rape culture to persist, no politician should support something that gives more rights to a fetus than the woman carrying it.

7. Reforms that will eliminate co-pays for birth control after August 2012 – because it’s wrong for Viagra to be covered while birth control is not.

8. My right to vote.

9. The incredibly creative, intelligent writers at 99Problems.org for their courage, passion and drive to use the written word to question the status quo.

10. “Do you know why I smile? Because it’s worth it.”

MLK Dedication: I Have a Dream:

October 15, 2011 Front Page No Comments

One day, everybody will be entitled to a great education and health care. I believe that the two most important things to any society is education and health. A well-educated society is the most productive type. However, there are still too many gaps in both.

Everyone should be able to get a great education and everyone should be able to be healthy, regardless of their race, religion, sex, or income status. No one should go broke or put themselves in a huge hole just trying to become healthy or educated. We need to fix our education and healthcare system, with that comes progress!

Never Forgotten: Happy 40th Birthday Tupac

"I am society's child, this is how they made me, and now I'm sayin what's on my mind and they don't want that. This is what you made me, America."

Just months ago I was blogging on how Tupac’s profound messages still remained relevant today. As a young adult, I vividly recall being in middle school and hearing him say,” WE ARE THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS.”
