A Time-Line of American Political Assasinations

In the wake of the recent shooting of Congresswoman Giffords, we decided to put together a time-line of some of our nation’s most well known political related shootings. Of course, this is nothing to be proud of, but it does highlight how truly violent American politics can get. Check out the 1960s…can you imagine what our parents and grandparents were thinking? It must have a really scary time to be living.

January 30, 1835: Andrew Jackson is attempted assassinated by Richard Lawrence.
April 14. 1865: Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John W. Booth.
July 2, 1881: James Garfield is assassinated by Charles Julius Guiteau.
September 6, 1901: William McKinley is assassinated by Leon Frank Czolgosz.
October 13, 1912: Theodore Roosevelt attempted assassination committed by John F. Schrank.
September 8, 1935: Huey Long is assassinated by Carl Weiss.
November 1, 1950: Harry S. Truman attempted assassination committed by Richard Paul Pavlick.
June 12, 1963: Medger Evers is assassinated by a Ku Klux Klan Member.
November 22, 1963: John F. Kennedy is assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.
February 21, 1965: Malcolm X is assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam; Talmadge Hayer, Norman Butler and Thomas Johnson.
April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr is assassinated by James Earl Ray.
June 5, 1968: Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated by a Palestinian Sirham Sirham.
December 4, 1969: Fred Hampton is assassinated by a Police Officer.
November 27, 1978: Harvey Milk (First openly gay elected politician) is assassinated, by who remains unknown.
December 8, 1980: John Lennon is assassinated by Mark Davis Chapman.
February 7, 2001: George W. Bush attempted assassination committed by Robert Pickett.
January 8, 2011: Gabrielle Giffords attempted assassination committed by Jared Lee Loughner.

Wow, Sarah Palin actually had an image on her website with Giffords as a target in sniper crosshairs! I think it’s unwise to assume that Gifford’s shooter is in the Tea-Party. But I think this highlights why political rhetoric based on fear and intimidation is unwise and morally bankrupt

Judge Blocks Key Sections of Arizona’s Immigration Law

A judge on Thursday blocked the most controversial sections of Arizona’s new immigration law from taking effect, handing a major legal victory to opponents of the legislation.

The law will still take effect Thursday, but without many of the provisions that angered opponents — including sections that required officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws. The judge also put on hold a part of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton put those sections on hold until the courts resolve the issues.

Opponents say the law will lead to racial profiling and is trumped by federal immigration law.
