This Tuesday, President Obama proceeded to address the nation through his State of the Union speech for the fourth time since he’s been elected. As always, everyone from around the world checked in to see what issues he and his administration will be prioritizing in the near future. However, this year’s speech is a little more important than the last, given the fact that this could be Obama’s last opportunity, as president, to make an impact that would satisfy constituents.

The Washington Post created the featured infographic identifying the amount of time the president spent talking about a specific issue in comparison to the last few speeches.

Janelle Monae speaks on her recent performance for the 44th president at a fundraiser that took place a month back at the University of Illinois, Chicago. As a young voter, she was very clear about continuing to support him in November. In the featured excerpt, Janelle highlights some of Obama’s statistics during his 4-year tenure as Commander in Chief:

These are all things he said he’d do before he was elected and did them. There are more important accomplishments that can be added to this list. I strongly believe our nation should continue upon this path, bringing justice to all and change where needed. The President will be partying with the people of Chicago today as he reaches the big Hawaii 5-0! But I’m curious to know if he will be allowed to have his cake and eat it too…

Today the League will be participating in a Live TownHall Forum w/ the President. Executive Director of LYVEF, Rob ‘Biko’ Baker and Director of Creative Strategy @ Cashmere Agency will be attending this event at the White House together representing young voters and stakeholders in the community. This townhall is the chance for us to remind the administration that we need decisive, youth-oriented solutions to our employment and electoral woes. We need your help to make sure that our voices are heard during this first-of-its-kind media event.

The League’s communications team will lead the mob online, tweeting our questions, concerns and comments to @TownHall. While many have written us off as disengaged and apathetic, the truth is that we have the potential to beat any corporate bad guy or Wall Street Bankster that stands in our way. There is power in numbers and because this event takes place via Twitter, we have a perfect opportunity to amplify our message and make sure that president and his staff hear us out.

USA PATRIOT ACT = Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001

Yesterday, Americans were able to gain comfort in knowing that we would be able to keep “the eyes behind our backs” open for four more years in order to combat terrorist plots against our country.  It’s the same bill that former President George W. Bush, put into fruition back in 2001 when the World Trade Center attacks took place. According to the White House, President Obama was in France holding a meeting with eight nations and wouldn’t be able to sign the four-year act so he directed an auto-pen that would sign it for him. That’s gangsta but technically forgery Mr. President!

Ok, I’ll give em this one but the others were just disrespectful! This dude is really starting to look like Obama to me too.

…or any other ethnic group, culture, or spiritual beliefs, at that. So, why would I or anyone else be surprised that there wasn’t any coverage of the President’s State of the Union Address on their site? One of the most energetic speeches of our time was broadcasting LIVE everywhere last night but you could’ve easily fallen into the category of people that didn’t give a damn and assumed the routine position of complacency on a couch with a remote, watching BET’s “The Game”. In fact, Worldstar is an online B.E.T. without any limits and it’s sad but safe to say, most people are addicted to the struggle and couldn’t give a damn about progressing!!!

Who cares about Worldstar?

Apparently, a lot of people, assuming the daily 1.4 million page views it receives. When rumors circulated this week that the site was down, the conversation, whether it was positive or negative, went viral. Truth-be-told, we have really given this site (who’s servers aren’t even in the US) too much power and no accountability whatsover. I guess, you’d have to really understand the power of the internet to really grasp how big Worldstar really is, then to be offended.

What’s really Worldstar’s intentions?

I always say, “If they aren’t for us, they are against us”. And they could really be for us but most people’s main focus is to make money will do it by any means and if a site is generating millions of page views, you better believe that there is a lot of money generating from ads. Try a monthly ad revenue at approximately $110,368. Who would want ads on a site like that? I believe its important that we challenge those specific people and stress to them, if you’re down with the WSHH model of destroying our community instead of lifting it up, we will not support your brand anymore.

Sounds good right? The reality is a lot of the people Worldstar attracts are programmed just like you and I but we were fixated on a different channel. How can we sway those people away from something as powerful, negative, and senseless as this alleged “hip hop” platform that exploit black & white people everyday? Honestly, I hate to even associate this site with Hip Hop because Hip Hop is supposed to represent progress and Worldstar is just as a hindrance to our culture as the excessive, compromising music that is made everyday from those that wear the artist uniform.

As we try to comprehend the tragic shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 17 others in Tucson, Arizona today, social media gives us looks at the suspect and situation from a variety of angles.

Even though Giffords was shot in the head, she has survived her injuries thus far.

Go to suspected gunman Jared Lee Loughner’s YouTube channel, and the first thing you’ll hear is a video the suspect has favorited, with angry music repeatedly shouting, “Let the bodies hit the floor.” Also on the channel are a few videos Loughner apparently created himself, spelling out his confusing, nonsensical philosophy in white text over a black background.

Twitpic users have reacted to the shootings with photos of the suspect, and another widely circulated graphic is Sarah Palin’s map of the U.S., with the slogan “It’s Time to Take a Stand,” with crosshairs trained on certain areas, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ Arizona district. (Incidentally, Tea Party reps condemned the shootings).

The Congresswoman, the wife of Astronaut Mark Kelly who is commander of the next U.S. space shuttle mission, tweeted just before she was shot, inviting her constituents to the event where the gunman opened fire, killing 5 and injuring 13:

“My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by the let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later”

Meanwhile, a firestorm of accusations and controversy erupted on Twitter, where liberal blogger and Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas tweeted shortly after the incident, “Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin.”

Last week, I was in New York where I spent a few days in the mix with some of the non-profit sectors and Hip Hop’s elite such as American Values Institute, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Open Society Foundations, as well as Geoffrey Canada of The Harlem Children’s Zone who kicked off the conference by being the host facility of the panel that featured Russell Simmons, Nick Cannon, & Lupe Fiasco. The conference focused on trying to create a better portrayal of blacks, males in particular, on the big screen and in the music. I wanted to be a fly on the wall. On one hand, I have every right to be in that room but I represent a demographic that don’t even know that room exists.

“Success is what you make it, take it how it comes, A half a billion in 20s is like a billion where I’m from”, says Pusha T of The Clipse on Kanye’s ‘So Appalled’. He’s saying a lot in this one line. Some of us are content with mediocre success because everything else is either unrealistic or too hard to obtain given our circumstances. How can a young black man re-imagine something they never saw? We mimic our surroundings. To most of us common folk, there isn’t anything to imagine but the present. The present is unemployment, so get it by any means. This is why its so easy to tear our people/community down through our music/media instead of uplifting them/it. The Black Male is trying to survive ……..but we have been brainwashed to think that money is the only survival method.

The black male hasn’t been portrayed as a positive man in the media or on the big screen because he isn’t positive in real life. But some would say he isn’t positive in real life because of whats on the big screen or in the media.

Well, imagine The Huxtables in The Hood: Claire is the only parental role being played because Cliff didn’t like his role enough so he never came on set. At least that’s how the Cosby show played on my TV. Ok on the actual show, Cliff is supposed to represent a successful black man, and that’s the only representation of a successful black man that we knew of but it wasn’t real enough to believe that it could be us because of our fathers and lack thereof. Having a degree and a perfect family is society’s definition of success. So we created success through other avenues because the traditional school and work atmosphere wasn’t designed for us to strive in. Although, some did, the majority of us didn’t.

We can be successful but we might as well as be unsuccessful if we aren’t designing a blueprint like our predecessors tried to do for us. How hard is it or how easy is it for 100 black millionaires to come together and create POWER. You thought Obama winning the Presidency was inspiring. There is power in money and people. We have the money but the people won’t invest into anything if we don’t give them something solid and intentional. We’re more than basketball players now. We can own the league. We’re more than rappers, we made the industry what it is and can do it again. The Black Male has to believe in the Black male but for so long the Black male/female was made to believe that they were wrong and that the white was the only exception.

I’m here to tell you we’ve come along way, but we haven’t ARRIVED yet.

Here’s a revolutionary idea: get to know your town’s teachers. They’re pretty easy to spot; chalk on their shirts, rulers in hand. They’re the ones teaching our kids how to take charge of America.

Investing in education is an investment in ourselves. Moreover, it’s an investment in our businesses, in our technology…the minds of our children will enable the prosperity of tomorrow, and our schools will either discourage or encourage their dreams.
