The Chocolate Chip Model Sucks

March 21, 2011 Problems No Comments

Check out this intriguing blog by New Organizing Institute fellow, Ashindi Maxton. Maxton basically says that the progressive movement isn’t doing enough to make sure that individuals of all backgrounds have a seat at the table. But instead of just harping on the problems, she also provides readers with some possible solutions.

Check out the blog…it’s pretty good.

Racism in 2010 and Beyond

Many people have experienced racism first-hand. Prejudice can be defined as thinking that a race is better than any other race. The issue with racism today is that it is still present. We are faced with racism everyday and it eventually leads to discrimination and social profiling.

Racism is a word that’s conditioned. Racism has existed for centuries. Racism can’t be traced back through the generations, though we know that racism has always been imposed upon those that were different than the majority. Many people are sensitive when the topic is race, gender, cultural groups, etc… This is a condition that has plagued races of all kind.

The X Fact(her): White in America

July 28, 2009 Front Page 6 Comments

Kudos to CNN for “Black in America 2″.

You get an A for effort and a gold star for correcting the lameness of the first installment. I even peeped a commercial for the upcoming “Latino in America”. Aside from them trying to educate the masses and convince everyone to empathize with our neighbors, let’s give CNN a round of applause for giving Soledad O’Brien something to do. It doesn’t hurt that her multi-racial background makes it more acceptable for her to tackle the issue of race. No one knows what she is. I’m sure she is going to ride this “… in America” thing until the wheels fall off or until Prez Obama is out of office and no one cares to talk about race anymore.

Sidenote: If you want to see an amazing documentary about Blacks in America watch ABC News’ Out of Control: AIDS in Black America. I love it when Terry Moran leaves Jesse Jackson dumbfounded.

While I was flipping the channel to purposely avoid watching “B.I.A. 2″, something occurred to me. I wasn’t interested in watching the series because I am black and I know what life is like for me. However, I would be inclined to watch a series on what it is to be “White in America”.

More Diversity = More Profit

July 13, 2009 Front Page No Comments

Business woman with moneyMy friend recently interviewed for a job at a large economic firm in New York. While researching the company, he turns to me and says, “The CEO is a woman. Isn’t that weird?”

Rare? Perhaps. Weird? Absolutely not.

In fact, studies have shown that having more women in senior positions isn’t simply “fair,”  it is more profitable. According to studies conducted by Ernst & Young, Columbia University, McKinsey & Co, Goldman Sachs, and Pepperdine University, companies with more female senior members yield higher profits.  In fact, Pepperdine University found that Fortune 500 firms with women in charge profited 18 to 69 percent more than other companies.  In examining the top European companies, McKinsey found that more gender diversity led to higher stock performance. Similarly, “Catalyst, a research firm focused on women and business, found that Fortune 500 companies with three or more women in senior management positions score higher on top measures of organizational excellence. In addition, companies with three or more women on their boards outperformed the competition on all measures by at least 40 percent.”

Still not convinced? Let us put the numbers aside and be a little politically incorrect. … Continue Reading

How Black and White is the Roomie Racial Divide?

July 8, 2009 Front Page No Comments

If you’re not a millionaire or living with family, chances are you’re currently sharing a dorm or an apartment with roommates. Bets are you chose them (or they were selected for you) based on living compatibility: likes, dislikes, level of cleanliness, habits etc. But have you ever really analyzed them based on race?

New studies by several universities have, with several surprising results. Living with a roommate of a different race will decrease your prejudice levels. If you’re a white student (who statistically enters college with the least diverse friendship group), you’ll become the most likely to develop cross-racial relationships, whereas the opposite occurs with black students (they enter with diverse friendship then experience a decline as they seek out people from a similar background). Hispanic and Asian students maintain the same levels as they had before entering freshman year.

On the other hand, cross-racial relationships are more stressful than homogenous ones—they spent less time together and shared fewer friends. However, if they managed to tough it out for 10 weeks, they would both experience an “improvement in racial attitudes.” … Continue Reading
