Conservative Marriage Vow Drops Slavery Reference

Did black children have better family conditions during slavery than they do today? Well according to an Iowa conservative Christian group, The Family Leader, they did. The passage which was originally included in a marriage vow, which was actually signed by two Republican presidential nominees, Michelle Bachmann and Rick Santorum read:

“Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American president.”

Political Quick Hits: July 1st Edition

Here’s your weekly quick look at few developing stories in the political arena:

  • News broke late last Friday night that New York would become the 6th state to legalize gay marriage. New York’s legislature, which is Republican-controlled, passed the bill with a 33-to-29 vote. Gov. Andrew Cuoumo has since signed it into law and gay couples in New York will be able to marry in 30 days. (CNN)

Prop 8 Overturned

According to the Twitterverse, Prop 8 has officially been overturned, on the basis that the anti-gay marriage proposition is unconstitutional. A sample from the judge’s ruling:

“Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same sex couples.”
