October 24, 2011 Front Page No Comments

As most of you know, I am a visual anthropologist. I not only study visual representations of culture, but I am also an ethnographic documentary filmmaker. That being said, I love films. I grew up making films with my father, attending international film fests, and I currently intern for Chicago’s International Children’s Film Fest. I believe films have the power to change our lives. At this critical time in American culture and politics, I think it’s a good idea to reflect on some great films that never go out of style. Check out this list; then go check out these films, and tell me what you think. It just might change your life!!

For some reason, I am willing to bet the producers at FoxNews.com weren’t expecting to get such an articulate African American Muslim man. Check about Ib’s book Green Deen.

Leave The Muslim Community Center Alone, People. Geez.

This is one of those things that’s just like. . .”Oh, god . . .really? No. Stop that. You can’t mean that”.

A big rally is being planned to protest the construction of a Mosque and Islamic Community Center near the site of Ground Zero.

One of the opponents is quoted as saying “‘If the Japanese decided to open a cultural centre across from Pearl Harbour, that would be insensitive. If the Germans opened a Bach choral society across from Auschwitz, even after all these years, that would be an insensitive setting.”

Considering that Bach died in 1750, I have a feeling that few Polish Jews are holding him personally responsible for World War II. But even that’s not the point.

Obviously, building a mosque near ground zero, as stated by the leader of the project, “sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11″. It shows that American Muslims are working as hard as they can to disprove the crazy stereotypes about Islam that have become rampant since 9/11. This protest is a depressing sign that they have a pretty big mountain to climb if that’s going to happen.

Fear is a Mutha…

Two months ago, the world was unfortunately fascinated by the Ft. Hood Army base slayings allegedly committed by Nidal Malik Hassan, and now we once again revisit the realm of Islam and terrorism; added in with another caveat – race – in the case of 23 year-old Nigerian national, Umar Farouk Abdulmuttallab and his face being on the cover of Newsweek.

Umar, who was apprehended on Christmas Day (2009) for allegedly trying to set-off an explosive device in his underwear on Northwest Airlines Flight 253, en route from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, is not what you consider a “typical Muslim, hell-bent radical.” In fact, Mr. Abdulmuttallab comes from a wealthy Nigerian family. However, the most interesting thing about this case is not that Umar’s own father (Umaru Abdul Mutallab) allegedly tried to alert Nigerian and CIA officials about his son’s movements/ideological positions or that the country of Nigeria (the most populous and one of the wealthiest sub-Saharan African nations) itself will now receive some “justified,” as well as undue, scrutiny. On the contrary – the interest is about the so-called “face of terror.”

In examining the reasons why a small group of Muslims may resort to such actions should no longer be restricted to prejudicial assumptions – i.e. “its them Arabs…” Or, “those Black Muslims.” Those simple, dismissive generalizations don’t do justice to analyzing why individuals or organizations believe such violent actions are called for. And when the media sensationalizes terrorist activity by creating these “faces” of phenomena or ideology that many Americans do not fully understand, it engages in its own practice of racial/ethnic profiling – never really getting to the heart of the problem.

“Why would a young man coming from a moderate and financially well-off Muslim family want to commit such a heinous act” is the question that should be asked. This is something serious to ponder because Umar Farouk is not the first of its kind. Osama bin Laden comes from a wealthy Saudi family, and many suspected and convicted terrorists are highly educated. But I guess it’s so much easier to “Willie Horton” the religion of Islam.

jamuhammad1Guantanamo US Trial

Peace peeps. If you thought my blog on my experiences observing and partaking in the November elections in Maine was provocative, my latest musings on WireTapMag.org around the Fort Hood killings, the death of DC sniper-John Allen Muhammad and the trial of alleged “mastermind” of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (“Who’s Afraid of the ‘Muslim Boogeyman?’”) is sure to raise those stakes.

Check it out over at Wiretap!
