WTF! Another shooting has taken place near Virginia Tech and this time an officer has been shot! These students can’t catch a break. Just this last Wednesday, parents were testifying about the university’s response that resulted in their children losing their lives in the April 16, 2007, shootings, which left 33 dead, including the shooter.

I was just recently asked to play Grand Theft Auto 4 by a 9-year old. I figured I’d join em and when I did, I was appalled to see how much the game has been modified. At the same time, I was amazed at how good of a reckless driver the kid was. He knew all the codes to re-up on expensive cars, guns and was well-versed in assaulting by-standers on the streets. He even told me to cover my eyes when the half-naked lady appeared on the screen.

I mean, I like driving and shooting people in a game as much as the next person, but this shouldn’t be a kid’s passion by any means. Of course, this is just a game, but the reality is that everything in the game is a reflection of some incident that has taken place in someone’s life. I honestly feel like a kid could play this so much that the violence around them would feel as fake as the game.

GTA just keeps getting more real as the years progress. And here comes the 5th edition. This is as real as it gets!

Collins Academy gets a surprise visit from Nicki Minaj as she takes on the role of Principal. School has never been this cool.

*sigh* Kids these days…

As I read an article on CNN today, “3 kindergartners wounded when gun discharges at Houston school”, my eyes were frozen to my desktop screen in horror.

The report states, the gun apparently fell out of the 6-year-old’s clothing during lunch and discharged causing the injuries. A slew of questions raced my mind: Was the student armed because he was being bullied? Did he bring the gun to show off to others to be cool? How did this child get access to a loaded firearm? How will these young students recover mentally after being shot at such an earlier age? Where are these parents and will they be held legally responsible for this incident?

As a parent, it is imperative that you are communicating with your children about what is occurring daily in their classes and school because this one conversation that could prevent a fatal injury or death. If you are a parent that has a gun, here are a few safety measures that could prevent another incident like this one:

1. Keep your firearm locked away at all times
2. Lock ammunition in a separate area from firearm
3. Talk to your children about guns.  According to the Think First Foundation, children as young as three have the ability to shoot a gun, but lack the knowledge of its consequences.

Don’t spend your life mourning the loss of a loved one over an incident that could have been prevented. Take the proper and necessary gun safety precautions.

Young People all over the world are producing music, some with videos, challenging their favorite artists to be more responsible. The youth ranging from 9 years old to their 30′s understand that these icons must be held accountable for all of the negativity they so nonchalantly put out to the world on a daily. Word to my homie Muhibb Dyer, The children are indeed crying, specifically in this video, for Lil Wayne to check himself for the degradation of the black women we call mom, wife, sister, grandma, etc.

Anytime I see Kathleen Bradley, whether it’s on the Price is Right or some random tv exposure, I can just imagine Smokey(chris Tucker) screaming, “dayum, Ms. Parker finer than a mother-F*****!” In reference to Katheleen, he’s right, she is fine and she is someone’s mother. In fact, her son is a local rapper that is trying to acquire fame in the music industry. Below is one of his music videos where Kathleen, basically reinacts her famous scene in “Friday” while her son sits with his gazing friends.

Some people might think that her feature was a bit much. Personally, I’ll have to watch 30-40 more times to really generate an opinion. She isn’t my mom!

Check out this eyebrow raising story from Ohio. Apparently, Kelley Williams-Bolar tried to give her kids a better life by sending her children to the nearby majority-White school district where her father lives — and she went to jail for it. Now her career as a teacher is in jeopardy.

I for one believe that rules that restrict people from being able to opt into any school district they like are important. And not because I think kids shouldn’t be able to go to good schools, but because I understand that public dollars are scarce and should be reserved for tax payers’ services. After all, far too many people from outside the community get publicly funded jobs and don’t live in the communities that they serve, and those monies never get back into the public coffers. Many municipalities across the country have rules that force their cops, teachers and other civil servants to live within the district. So, in short, it goes both way.

Programs like the Milwaukee Public Schools’ Chapter 220, which aims to ameliorate the impacts of segregation by reserving spots for children of color in suburban schools, are decent policy fixes for the inherent problems and inequalities attached to education. And I might get smacked by my progressive friends, but I also think school choice is a way to fix some of this as well. (Of course, the best way to stop stuff like this is to just fix public schools.)

But at the end of the day, real justice requires that the punishment fit the crime; what Williams-Bolar is facing is clearly over the top. Call on Ohio Governor John Kasich to publicly denounce her punishment and also do all he can to right this wrong.

NO CONDOM NO WAY. I’ve been saying it for years!!!!

If you come to Milwaukee and you’re looking for a place to shop, Mayfair Mall is one of the few appealing options. It’s located in Wauwatosa, a suburban city within Milwaukee County. The population is approximately fifty thousand. The racial makeup of the city was 93.97% White, 2.04% African American, according to the 2004 Census Estimate. Well those same people were scared to death this weekend as a gang of majority black, Milwaukee youth filled up the Village of Tosa’s Mall and began to act unruly. “Give us, gangmembers, something to do then”, shouts our youth everytime something like this occurs. I don’t condone mob meet-ups and shooting firearms in any public setting, but I know that it goes on everyday in my hood. Tosa and Milwaukee aren’t that far from each other. Why should they feel more safe over there than where we are?

This is the same mall that stopped playing movies that would be considered of urban interest because of a social riot that took place in the lobby area during the release of ‘Barbershop’ a good few years ago. What do you expect from a large group of teenagers in a mall looking for kicks? We have every right to be there, especially if we’re bringing in a good portion of the revenue. Don’t treat us like aliens, but come up with a solution for the unruly youth and not just the black kids. For the last decade and more, Milwaukee has consistently shown a lack of urgency to meet the needs of our youth. Instead of putting money into the redevelopment of the city with the youth on their minds, they totally forgot about us. In fact, if you want to stop tearing up these malls, then stop blatantly closing down every school that I’ve attended so we can tear up some books. NEW BOOKS, NOT THE OLD ONES MY MAMA USED!!!! Our official mall, The Grand Avenue, is on it’s last leg, so we try to blend in the places that aren’t forgotten about, not because we want to, but have no choice.

The majority of the time, these dudes that are shooting the guns aren’t gang affiliated but are bored youth, who just happened to be armed and dangerous because access to guns is more normal than access to books-Why? -Because we are too busy trying to survive in our hoods but culturally survival is just in the books in local suburbia land (long sentence? I’ve seen my homie get a longer sentence being bored, think about it)

Shouts out to Big Jerm! who is a really talented producer that is on deck whenever they need em. So, why an artist would approach Mac about stealing a track is crazy to me when he could get something Dope from his in-house production anytime.

As the world’s technology advances and our information highways become revolutionized through the internet, information is easier to obtain now more than any other time in history. These days, teachers can easily incorporate different educational tools into their classroom routines such as websites, online videos, and PowerPoint presentations. With just the click of a button, or more popularly, a simple Google search, students can gain a seemingly unlimited amount of knowledge about whatever topic they wish to learn about.

Today, most children and young adults receive a great deal of information through our ever-changing forms of media. However, despite the overload of information and educational outlets supplied by the media, many Americans, particularly our youth, still struggle academically.

According to the US Department of Education, since 1983, more than 10 million Americans reached the 12th grade with the inability to read at a basic level. During the same period, more than 6 million Americans dropped out of high school altogether.

A dilemma such as this is likely to make people question America’s commitment to education. How can a nation which provides seemingly unlimited educational information to its citizens have undereducated children?

As easily as most people would like to blame our country’s education issues on our school systems, inadequate government funding, or even an overall apathy toward the importance of education in this country we fail to realize that this problem is bigger than a blame game. There are numerous factors which play a role in a person’s academic development. We need to understand what factors develop the attitudes which cause students’ academic failures as well as success.

One of the most influential factors is in the educational development of a youth is his/her family background. Statistics from the Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, a journal on Developmental Psychology, have shown that a student’s parents’ educational levels and views on the importance of education usually have a major impact on the students’ views on education as well.

Another thing which we must consider is the learning environment of students. In many major Americans cities, particularly in our urban areas, schools are shameful. There is a lack of discipline, schools are over-crowded and poorly funded. These conditions often inhibit student’s learning abilities as well as their attitude toward learning.

Another major part of a student’s learning environment which is often overlooked is the teachers. It’s obvious that teachers have a tremendous effect on a student, especially when that student is of a young, impressionable age. A problem in many major American cities is that teachers fail to relate to students of different cultures than theirs and sometimes don’t have sympathy for students who struggle in school.

Dr. Cornel West once said, “You can’t lead the people if you don’t love the people. You can’t save the people, if you don’t serve the people.” It’s time for Americans to apply that same standard to the education of our youth. We have to make sure we intend to lovingly serve our youth and help to ensure their academic success.

We cannot continue to rely on the government to increase funding in order to educate our children. The job of the government is to REGULATE, not EDUCATE. Government funding can’t motivate a student to learn like his parents can. Government funding can’t change a student’s perspective on school subjects such as history and math like a dedicated teacher can. Government funding can’t make a student proud of his/her academic achievements like his/her community can.

It will take a collaborative effort of parents, teachers, communities, and most of all the students themselves to make sure that our youth haves the proper environments and mindsets to reach their full potential.

Master P appears more mature than ever these days and he’s definitely not biting his tongue for anyone. His insight is remarkable, given the fact that he’s basically denouncing a lifestyle that he once pioneered. Sounding like an after school special, it’s obvious that P is moving in a positive direction for the benefit of his son and kids his age. It’s interesting to hear his perspective, though, on his brother and fellow New Orleans’ natives Lil Wayne & Baby. Do remember, this guy was once where Carter & Combs are at?

You know Ronald McDonald. Adorable character, right? Until you consider that he was designed specifically to entice young children into adopting a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits.

That’s why our friends at Corporate Accountability International have started a campaign to send Ronald into retirement. They argue that it’s time for Ronald to join his similarly endearing (if oddly phallic) friend Joe Camel and leave the world of advertising.

You can sign the petition for Ronald to retire at www.retireronald.org. I mean, the guy has to be bound for a heart attack pretty soon anyways, he should enjoy his old age while he can.

The world is yours? I guess it is. Obviously, in somebody’s world it’s cool for 8 year-old kids to reenact a script (a bad one) that embodies a lifestyle not even suitable for adults. At least in the Godfather, you get to experience some sort of family values. Scarface is literally all about the rise and fall in the drug game and doesn’t have any place in the children’s theater. (Well, not in any children’s theater that actually doesn’t want children to be psycho, coked out criminals.)

The director had to know this was wrong when he/she pulled out the popcorn to use as cocaine. It’s funny that the director thought that editing their expletives made this alright.
