A few weeks ago I was sitting in my crib in L.A. listening to Lil Boosie. I thought, “Man, maybe I should write him.”

Then I thought, “he probably wouldn’t write me back.”

So the next morning I was woke up to an e-mail that was sent to my phone from @BikoBaker. It was a letter from Lil Boosie to all his fans. That was my sign to write him.

So, I wrote him to tell him how I love his music and how I can relate and feel his pain in his songs. I told him the story of my two close friends getting killed by gun violence and how I got involved with the Campaign Against Violence / League of Young Voters Education Fund. I also told him about the movie I’m writing based on my two friends’ lives and asked him for advice on it.

After I sent the letter, I didn’t expect him to write back. Jeff, my friend who is the engineer at the studio I live in, told me he probably would because he has nothing else to do and that I had an interesting story.

When I got home last Thursday, Jeff asked me a question.

“Do you have a guy friend on Death Row?” Jeff asked “You got a letter from a dude on Death Row.”

It was from Mr. Bad Azz himself. I was geeked! LOL!

So here’s what he had to say:

He said he appreciates the love and support I have for him and how much he loves Milwaukee 4 Real! He also said that he was sorry to hear about my friends and that they are in a better place now. He loves the community work I am doing. He talked about how he used to do good things in the community that never got talked about.

Lil Boosie thinks my movie would be interesting and said to make sure that the characters in the movie act out exactly how you felt when it happened. He also said that he has trial in three months and he is fighting for his life over a lie but he just gon put it in God’s hands.

A million?! That’s a lot of ballpoint pens, huh?!

A bunch of the homies in Milwaukee have united to produce the featured song of the day. While I’ve heard talk about its production, I was a bit shocked to see it publicized as a completed project this morning. Pizzle released his Fame in Vain album a little earlier in the year and has gotten a lot of positive reviews for his part in the Green & Yellow collaboration w/ Prophetic. This song, however, is going to give him and his C.M.G. gang a lot of momentum, as it should. Rico Love is a very important piece to a lot of puzzles and now it’s coming together.

Rico is definitely a big draw, but I was actually very pleased to hear the talent of Kiara DuPree, one whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with in her earlier stages. It’s good to see she’s still at it and hopefully this isn’t the last that we’ll see of her. In fact, I wanna see a video for this!

It’s very troubling to know these young people are still not joking about taking the lives of other people. Like, I can imagine them saying, “I’ll kill that dude.” Then I ask, are we really that angry? There’s people in gov’t that’s doing much worse things to us and we aren’t even educated enough to get mad about it. That’s another sad story to weep about.

This morning, I woke up to friends of mine saying rest in peace and farewell to a person we all knew. It reminds me that one day you’re cool and then the next people could be talking about how cool you were. Andruw Damone, you were one cool dude! In high school, I enjoyed our back n forth banter but now you’re in a higher place.

Whether this unfortunate occurrence was over money, a girl, a mean mug in the club, a bad drug deal gone wrong, or two dudes that just didn’t get along, it still wasn’t worth taking the life of another.

I almost feel like I am preaching to the choir or I’m in the choir and we’re singing the same ol’ song. It’s no news to us, being the ones that are always sitting on the curbs in these situations with police officers pulling over our vehicles because they think we may fit one of their descriptions. I remember a cop pulling me over in Milwaukee and blatantly saying we’re looking for guns and drugs. He took me out the car, placed me in the back of his squad car and began a search. He found nothing and released me. To some, this may seem like an unfortunate event, however, I’m used to that as much as I am the seasonal snowstorm. The real question is, should I be?

The Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee’s premier news source, has confirmed a recent study that expresses what we’ve known since we were allowed to drive cars: “A black Milwaukee driver is seven times as likely to be stopped by city police as a white resident driver.”

It’s the third day that I’ve sought out some of the country’s dopest female representation in hip-hop. What’s ill is that two out of the three are from my hometown, Milwaukee. You’ve gotta give a listen to this young lady, Signif. As a matter of fact, follow her on Twitter immediately after you check out one of her most recent audio visuals and download her latest collection of music below. You will probably be more confused than disappointed because she’s definitely not getting the recognition that she should be.

I’m on a search for some of the dopest female emcees! Next stop, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Check out the homie Betsie Mae who’s making a name for herself in the local music scene. Awhile back we featured a cypher that took place in the Mil where she participated and held her own. As far as females in hip-hop goes, the lane is pretty wide open. “Teach you how to Jack” is a local YouTube hit produced by Milwaukee rap artist Eastside LBoog. If you’re actively DJing in Milwaukee and happen to be working a party that consists of urban youth, this song is highly requested. Or at least it once was. I’ve been out the city for a year.

If you’re wondering, “Jacking” is to Milwaukee youth what “Stuntin” was to Cash Money Millionaires in 1998. However, for a person to even be compared to Cash Money Millionaires, they’d have to have, what YC calls, “Racks on top of Racks.” How these racks are acquired is up to the artist that endorses them. Most of the racks are said to come from “hustlin” on the corners from the wee hours of the morning. Very blatantly, in Eastside LBoog’s last video, “Trap House Money,” he claims to prosper from the cash accumulated in his dope house. This could all be very real or entertaining fiction. The FEDS are taking it very serious. Haven’t you guys learned?

It’s very hard to believe that drug dealers are selling drugs and making music about it. Wesley Snipes played the hell out of the Nino Brown role but when the director yelled cut, he was non-tax paying Wesley again. Are these young artists that eager for attention that they’d jeopardize their freedom in return for a few Facebook likes and YouTube shares?

Kristyna Wentz-Graff, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel photographer was wrongfully arrested by MPD while covering a protest last week, even though her badge credentials were clearly visible. However, at the time, the officers were too focused on the job at hand to see her ID, which was their excuse for the erroneous arrest. Hopefully, young people aren’t denied their right to vote even though they have their IDs!!!

I can’t think any other instances where the cops overdid their job like this. Sike! I can’t even count them all on one hand.

On May 9, 2010, 24-year-old Jesus Gonzalez was accused of first-degree intentional homicide for the death of Danny John, 29, and attempted first-degree intentional homicide of Jered Corn, 22, who was left paralyzed from the chest down. John and Corn allegedly assaulted Gonzalez while he was moving his car at 12:15 a.m. Did Jesus save his own life or did he simply take another life and paralyze another?

Now that Wisconsin has passed the new concealed-carry gun law, people can carry guns openly in public if they have a permit after November 1. Interestingly enough, Gonzales was a big proponent of the legislation to legalize openly carrying weapons. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, he has a history of altercations involving firearms.

Could Jesus have avoided killing another man if he had simply left his gun in the house? Could the tables be turned and John and Corn be in Gonzales’ shoes right now? If Gonzales would have committed this crime after November 1st would he be an innocent man?

What are your thoughts about this case? Do you feel Jesus should be convicted of both charges? Should Corn be arrested or charged with something?

Since the Voter ID law passed in Wisconsin this past summer, the League has been busy helping young people get IDs so that we can retain our right to vote. Despite the fact that legislators argued that mandating a government-issued photo ID was common sense, the law disenfranchised nearly half of young Wisconsinites.

The numbers don’t lie – 1 million people in Wisconsin do not have the right ID to vote anymore. In Milwaukee County, 47 percent of African-Americans do not have ID. The IDs were supposed to be provided for free, but journalists caught state officials being deceptive about the cost of an ID. If an individual does not say that the ID is specifically for voting, you could be faced with a $28 fee.

Sounds like a poll tax, huh?

To top it off, voters have to bring a copy of their birth certificate – which also costs $20. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wrote today that State Senator Spencer Coggs put forth a memo asking the fee for a birth certificate to be waived in Milwaukee County, which could benefit more than 20,000 people in the county alone.

The truth of the matter is, if you have to spend $48+ to simply cast a vote in an election, we do not live in a true democracy where all voices can be heard. That’s why we’re working to make sure we educate our friends and family about the new law before we are disenfranchised through a subtle poll tax passed by those who want to silence our voice.

Brewers beat the Pirates, Scott Walker takes a stab at the back of the economy, the transit crisis is stopping the working class from getting to work, and a dog tested positive for canine distemper, causing a statewide halt on dog adoption.

This is definitely not the sexiest set of articles but at least violence isn’t the cause of Milwaukee trending on Google! I’ll take this news over that any day.

I wanna send a BIG Happy Birthday shout out to Dimitrius ‘Tank’ Jackson, a UWM student that died at a BSU functon that took place on campus in 2007. As the DJ of the event, it was the first time I ever witnessed a death that wasn’t violent at all. It was rare and unfortunate. My prayers still go out to Inglish Grover, the mother of his child and the rest of his family! This is something I will never forget. #RestInPeace&Paradise

If anyone ever says Milwaukee isn’t home to some of the illest, brightest hip-hop artists, I’d beg to differ. Not only is there a lot of talent there but they’re trying to be as positive as they can given the circumstances. It’s hard to be positive when the murder rate is high, unemployment is high, and college tuition is high. Hell, no wonder everyone is high!

There was a silent breeze in Milwaukee yesterday evening. One that may not have been felt in years, but a cool breeze that sports fans in the Mil have been trying to avoid for years. You know the breeze that sent Hall of Fame center from the Bucks to the L.A. Lakers. The same breeze that traded 2011 NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki to the Dallas Mavs on June 24, 1998. Yeah, that chilly feeling is being felt up and down 1-94, US-41 and in all 42,000 seats in Miller Park.

The Milwaukee Brewers all-star first baseman and son of baseball great Cecil Fielder confirmed Wednesday evening on a TBS interview that this would be his final year with the brew crew. Thanks to the bat of Fielder, the Brewers have cruised to the top of the NL Central division and are headed to MLB’s postseason. Prince is putting up NL MVP numbers this season batting .294 with 32 home runs and 109 RBIs. When asked about the possible break up between Fielder and fellow all-star Brewer Ryan Braun, he stated “it’s been great, unfortunately, this is probably the last year of the one-two punch. Hopefully we can go out with a bang.”

In a town with a history of sports tragedies, Fielder’s possible departure will not only affect the Brewers’ success in the future; it could also hurt ticket sales and tourism from people who plan to travel to Milwaukee to see the Prince. As of now, it’s no word on who a front-runner could be to sign Fielder in the off-season, but I know of three teams that may be in the running: the Phils, Red Sox and Yankees. Although all have current all-star first basemen, you never know with those teams. I could even see Fielder at first and Pujols at third playing at Wrigley field. Only time will tell.

Yep, Milwaukee is on the map. We’re definitely killing em… Our own, that is! I woke up to a text from my mom asking me if I knew Dwight McCoy, followed by a tweet with the link to the story. When I saw the headlines, “Milwaukee Producer Murdered,” Koo-Laid & Lala is the first thing that came to mind. After meeting fam a few times at events and talking about collaborating, I gathered that homie was sincere about coming up by way of music in MKE. Team Loyalty Ent is the label he managed with Cincere being their main artist.

I don’t know the motives behind Dwight’s death but I know MKE is full of haters so I’m curious to know, Are we taking music too serious or are we not taking life serious enough???
