Here’s your weekly quick look at this BIG week in politics including a round-up of stories from the 2012 election:

  • President Obama won re-election late Tuesday night beating Mitt Romney 303 electoral votes to 206 votes. As of  November 8th, Florida’s 29 votes were still undecided as they were having issues counting them. President Obama won the national popular vote 60,782,354 to Romney’s 57,884,882.  The first big issue for President Obama’s second term is avoiding the “fiscal cliff”.  Congress has an end of the year deadline to come up with a compromise or massive spending cuts will kick in and tax breaks will expire. (CNN)
  • The election on Tuesday was a big win for marriage equality in four states. In Maine, Maryland, and Washington State voters said yes to marriage equality measures. And in Minnesota, voters rejected a measure against same-sex marriage. This is a huge step forward in regards to marriage equality and could be the tipping point that really gets the ball rolling for the rest of the country. The Supreme Court will also likely decided sometime this month whether to take up any or all of the marriage equality cases seeking review. (Washington Post)

It has happened four times in 1824, 1876, 1888, and most recently in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost to George W. Bush. So what is the Electoral College and how does it work? Find out on the next page…
