Guns Go From Police to Streets

March 17, 2010 Front Page 1 Comment

I thought we were taking guns off the streets..?

Washington — Two guns used in high-profile shootings this year at the Pentagon and a Las Vegas courthouse both came from the same unlikely place – the police and court system of Memphis, Tenn.

Law enforcement officials said both guns were once seized in criminal cases in Memphis. The officials described how the weapons made their separate ways from an evidence vault to gun dealers and to the shooters.

The use of guns that once were in police custody and later involved in attacks on police officers highlights a little-known divide in gun policy in the United States: Many cities and states destroy guns gathered in criminal investigations, but others sell or trade the weapons to get other guns or buy equipment such as bulletproof vests.

Rumors Continue To Swirl Around Pittsburgh Police Brutality Case

PITTSBURGH — A magistrate’s decision to drop criminal charges last week against a Creative and Performing Arts student set off rumors that a work-related retaliation might come from Pittsburgh police officers.

Rumors of a work slowdown or diminished patrols came after a judge said the evidence presented left him with no other alternative than to drop prowling and other charges against Jordan Miles, who claims police beat him during his arrest.

The dismissal of charges has some officers saying it is a failure of the justice system, Channel 11 News reporter Trisha Pittman said.

Deputy Chief Paul Donaldson said he e-mailed officers because of concerns they might curtail their duties based on a perception that the courts failed them.

Pittsburgh police have been warned not to call in sick without reason or cut back on patrols.

CAN WE LIVE…PLEASE??

sg1l32631

It is Saturday January 9th, 2010 and as I prepare to participate in this event, I think to myself how many more of these will I attend? I should be excited because this is an opportunity for me to see all my loved ones and friends I haven’t seen in a long time. We never get to hang out anymore. But there is no happiness today.

This is a home going celebration of one of my lil homies and I’m the DJ. A crew accompanies me with no equipment in hand as we witness the double funeral of Donte Pearson and Don Hamilton who were struck by suspects fleeing police. In the distance, some neighborhoods away, another family prepares for a similar fellowship in memory of Shanica Adkins, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who shared the same cause of death.

Police pursuit deaths are on the rise in my city as Melinda Moore was struck yesterday morning when she stepped into the street in the 2700 block of N. 20th St. According to Police Chief  Edward Flynn, officers pulled over a van they believed to be stolen. The van took off and eventually struck Moore. The van later was located and three people were arrested, but the driver was still at large, Flynn said.

They’ve been singing that same “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime” song forever but as corny as it sounds, the lyrics are true. A crime like this is unfair and as wreckless as texting while driving. As unfortunate of an incident this is, there aren’t too many ways to prevent them. We must make smarter decisions about life and consider those that are effected by our actions.

My prayers go out to the families of them all. But what’s even sadder about this is these are four people that hadn’t even really had the chance to live life to its fullest and they died over something they didn’t have anything to do with. All four victims were  between the ages of 20-23 and they all occurred within the last two months. The individuals responsible are either twice the victims age, which is a shame or the same age and that’s an even more negative aspect to consider.

We can’t keep playing with life, CAN I LIVE??? CAN WE LIVE…PLEASE???

Problem: Police Brutality || Courtesy, Professionalism and Respect?

February 15, 2010 Culture, Front Page, Power 4 Comments

police-brutality1

I woke up Saturday morning to a message informing me that my best friend had been arrested for possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct. It was the beginning of a long day that would erase any remaining faith I had in the criminal justice system in New York City.

According to my friend, he was on his way to a party in Bushwick, Brooklyn with two friends, when they stopped in a doorway to light a cigarette. Suddenly, two plainly dressed men jumped out of an unmarked car and attacked them, throwing them against the wall and beginning to pat them down but never even stating they were police officers. My friend, terrified he was being mugged or kidnapped, begged to at least see Police ID. He then alleges that the man said “Here’s my ID”, producing handcuffs. Having no indication that these were actually police officers, they screamed to an onlooker to call the police and tried to run.

The “officers” (who still had failed to produce any form of identification) unzipped a closed pocket in Joey’s jacket and revealed the only incriminating thing he had with him; an empty pipe. Although there was resin in the pipe, which constitutes possession, in New York State possession of marijuana is a ticket violation, not even a misdemeanor. Despite this, cops dressed in actual uniforms then showed up and brought Joey and his friend to jail (their other friend had managed to run away).

Joey states that he was thrown to the ground during the arrest, and that the officers more than once called him “faggot”. Both his and his friend’s wrists are scraped and bruised from the arrest. There was no grounds to have searched them in the first place. There was no reading of rights.

Joey and his friend then spent a full 24 hours in jail. They slept on the ground in a crowded cell. They told me they were forced to urinate in front of a camera, in a toilet that was spattered in vomit and blood, and that the only food they were served was considered inedible by all of the inmates. They also said at one point, their access to water was cut off as a disciplinary device; an officer removed it and said “One person screwed it up for everyone”.

Joey also said that a conversation between inmates about the 72-hour holding limit before arraignment was interrupted by an officer who laughed and said “We can keep you here for as long as we want; it’s called the Patriot Act”.

It was confirmed by their defender that they should NEVER have been brought in for such minor charges, not even to mention that their entire arrest process was in violation of the Constitution. When they finally went before a judge they were released immediately, and no charges are being held against them.

But doesn’t that 24 hours in jail still seem like harsh punishment for standing on a stoop?

I know that this happens every day. What kind of city are we living in where a young person can’t walk down the street without fear that an agent of their own government may attack them? Instances like these are symptomatic of a broken system that allows much more serious offenses like the Amadou Diallo shooting to occur. We need to take action now to fix this system from it’s roots, not wait for more murders to happen before the public pays attention.

Lights.. Camera.. GUILTY!

July 1, 2009 Front Page No Comments

I’m going to tell you all a secret: Reality TV makes me really angry.

Ever since the first season of The Real World in 1992, more and more television has been composed of reality programs because they are cheap to produce, draw in a good audience and.. well, let’s face it.. the old adage goes, real life is stranger than fiction. And it bores me. I don’t care about Jon and Kate or Survivor and frankly, as much as I love P.E., thinking about Flavor Flav getting down with any of the girls on Flavor of Love gives me nightmares.

But while going through some daily blogs, I saw a piece that stopped me in my tracks. Michael Santos, prisoner and author of the book Inside: Life Behind Bars in America presents an interesting question: Can Reality TV Advance Prison Reform?

Let’s get into it after the jump! … Continue Reading

20 Years Ago: Tiananmen Square – A Testament To Youth Activism

June 4, 2009 Front Page No Comments

There are a number of images that permeate our collective psyche. Some are tragic, others hopeful. Every now and then, there is an image that embodies a state of mind so well that it can’t be described or explained. You just have to see it.

On June 4th, 1989, a young, unidentified man stood directly in front of a line of tanks in Beijing, China to express a sense of dissatisfaction, attempting to stop the Chinese government’s attacks on young activists.

Despite the defiance of Tank Man, the struggle continues.
