Boston Bruins Goalie Tim Thomas Snubs President Obama

The reigning Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins visited the White House on Monday, but star goalie Tim Thomas made bigger news by choosing not to attend. Tim Thomas was one of only two Americans on last year’s championship hockey team. In a statement on Facebook, Thomas said, “I believe the Federal government has grown out of control” and ” This was not about politics or party.”

He made this about politics when he chose not to attend!

Bachmann Throws the Deuces

If you can’t win a caucus in your birthplace, it is definitely time to throw in the red, white, and blue towel. Today, Michele Bachmann announced that she was dropping out of the 2012 election after reports circulated about her sixth place position in her home state of Iowa. It’s apparent that if a candidate does not have the support of their local community, most likely they will not be viewed as a favorable candidate in other states as well.

Last night, Bachmann only received 6,073 votes, which was only 5 percent of the total votes cast. Let’s examine some potential reasons why her candidacy was so unpopular.

Here’s your weekly quick look at few developing stories in the political arena:

  • This week, an Atlanta businesswoman came out and said she and Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain had a 13-year affair. Cain has since denied the allegations and said his critics were taking part in “character assassination.” Cain did eventually admit to giving the woman money, but called her just a friend. On Tuesday, he told his staff he is “reassessing” the viability of his campaign in light of these new allegations, which come after his recent harassment accusations. Cain said that no decision about staying in the race will come before he can have a face-to-face conversation with his wife, Gloria. Cain said he will return home today to speak with her. (CNN)

Obama announces student loan change. Is it enough?

On Wednesday, President Obama announced new programs to help ease the burden of students’ college loans. His executive order is meant to help lower monthly payments and help students consolidate their government loans. In consolidation, students will be able to lower their interest rates to 0.5 percent. The plan will limit the amount of of a student loan’s monthly payment to 10 percent of a graduate’s income, which is down from 15 percent. The plan also allows outstanding debt to be forgiven after 20 years, which is down from 25 years.

Here’s your weekly quick look at few developing stories in the political arena:

  • On Tuesday, President Obama’s jobs bill was defeated in the Senate. 50 senators voted for it, 49 against it, a bill needs 60 votes in the Senate to proceed. President Obama promised after this setback to break his jobs bill up into several smaller parts, which would each come up for a vote. (CNN)
  • On Wednesday night, Congress overwhelmingly passed free trade deals with Panama, Colombia and South Korea. This is seen as the most significant expansion of trade relations in two decades. The agreement with South Korea, which is the world’s 15th largest economy, could be a boost for the U.S. economy and has the potential to create up to 280,000 American jobs and boost exports by $12 billion, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission.
