Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter still fighting long after boxing days pass

“He once boxed to make a living — because, he said, blacks in the 1940s and ’50s had few options outside being a criminal or entertainer — but he fights today because innocent people in prison rarely have anyone in their corner. After enduring a portion of his prison bid and being instrumental in an oscar performance by Denzel Washington, Rubin Carter examines himself as he stares in the “Eye of the Hurricane” in his new book. CNN takes us back and then prepares us for the release of his latest production.

Of Black Folks and Intelligence

The recent news of a Harvard 3L suggesting that it is within the realm of possibility that black folks may have some type of genetic character trait which leads them to be intellectually inferior to white people has caused quite a stir.

Some have called it racist on its face while others have said that the “outrage” represents the worse example of what liberalism does to academia. They rationalize that it is certainly a question that is worthy of scientific inquiry and that freedom of speech and thought should exist everywhere and should certainly exist within the system of higher education.

While this notion may have a certain merit to it, the idea that people would not or should not be outraged is laughable at best.

How Black and White is the Roomie Racial Divide?

If you’re not a millionaire or living with family, chances are you’re currently sharing a dorm or an apartment with roommates. Bets are you chose them (or they were selected for you) based on living compatibility: likes, dislikes, level of cleanliness, habits etc. But have you ever really analyzed them based on race?

New studies by several universities have, with several surprising results. Living with a roommate of a different race will decrease your prejudice levels. If you’re a white student (who statistically enters college with the least diverse friendship group), you’ll become the most likely to develop cross-racial relationships, whereas the opposite occurs with black students (they enter with diverse friendship then experience a decline as they seek out people from a similar background). Hispanic and Asian students maintain the same levels as they had before entering freshman year.

On the other hand, cross-racial relationships are more stressful than homogenous ones—they spent less time together and shared fewer friends. However, if they managed to tough it out for 10 weeks, they would both experience an “improvement in racial attitudes.” … Continue Reading
