Here’s your weekly quick look at few developing stories in the political arena:

  • On Tuesday, President Obama’s jobs bill was defeated in the Senate. 50 senators voted for it, 49 against it, a bill needs 60 votes in the Senate to proceed. President Obama promised after this setback to break his jobs bill up into several smaller parts, which would each come up for a vote. (CNN)
  • On Wednesday night, Congress overwhelmingly passed free trade deals with Panama, Colombia and South Korea. This is seen as the most significant expansion of trade relations in two decades. The agreement with South Korea, which is the world’s 15th largest economy, could be a boost for the U.S. economy and has the potential to create up to 280,000 American jobs and boost exports by $12 billion, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission. House Passes Debt Ceiling Agreement

August 2, 2011 Front Page, Politics No Comments

On Monday night, the House of Representatives passed the debt ceiling bill by a 269-161 vote. The bill will next be voted on by the Senate today at noon, where it is expected to pass and be sent to President Obama to sign.

This really is cutting it to down to the last second, just like the government shutdown threat a few months ago, as the bill must be signed by Tuesday night to avoid default. In a surprise move at the vote, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords arrived to a standing ovation and cast her first vote  in the House since being shot in January, she voted in favor of the debt ceiling agreement.

In case you’re still wondering how the debt ceiling agreement affects you, check our guide.

However when it came down to it Tuesday, the voters of Pennsylvania were not happy with where Mr. Specter stood on different issues within our state and his long run in congress and so many felt that it was time for a new young person in office.
